Having moved out from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for about 3 years now, I was excited to visit and spend a few days touring food within the Toronto area. It is also Easter, a time to remember the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus Christ paid for us. It is also a 3-day long weekend to spend with family and loved ones.
Fun fact about me, I am a small town girl. But prior to becoming one to embrace suburban living, I loved the big cities. The hustly-bustly streets of Toronto and its environs. From Yonge street all the way to Queen street, the life there was what you would call exciting chaos.
Here are 10 spots to enjoy great-tasting food this Easter season:
10. Restaurant Pompette
If you are looking for a bougie spot with dishes that transport you to the dreamy streets of Paris this long weekend, Restaurant Pompette is the place to be this Easter.
Located in the heart of Little Italy in Toronto, this French cuisine spot prides itself on offering fine dining at its best! It is no wonder Air Canada listed them among Canada’s Best New Restaurants of 2021, they have worked to maintain that high standard.
The ambience is open, roomy and laced with contemporary French flair. From their recently unveiled Lobster in house Potato Buns, to their thoughtfully crafted cocktails, Pompette has something for everyone.
It is the beginning of spring and a whole new menu is being unveiled, definitely take the chance to enjoy it this Easter!
9. Oretta Toronto
Your first thought the moment you see (the photo above) what awaits you at Oretta Toronto is “this the spot!”, yes or yes?! With Oretta’s majestic walls and well-lit spaces, your long weekend has just begun to make absolute sense.
They are an Italian ristorante serving authentic Italian dishes made for the contemporary palette. Italian wines and cocktails are also fully in the chat, they have seasoned mixologists in-house to bring all your cocktail-tasting fantasies to life. The restaurant is strategically located in 2 spots; King St W. and Yonge Street. Their doors are open on Good Friday for an amazing Easter brunch.
8. Kaka All You Can Eat
And when they say all you can eat, they really mean all you can eat. You are yet to attain the peak of your food-ventures if you are yet to experience the finest of Japanese food. This one is for my buffet lovers who want a taste of everything on a budget this Easter.
With CAD$40-CAD$50, you can savor the rich seafood and sushi collection of Kaka in an atmosphere that is warm, vibrant and neat.
Just make sure you leave a bit of space for some gourmet desserts, I especially recommend their signature Kaka ice cream. You have the option to dine in or order takeout, and they offer discounts for the latter.
7. SK COOKKS
Oh I know you know, that I know you know…okay, I’ll cut it out. I would not skip on visiting one for the culture. SK Cookks is a top spot for authentic Nigerian cuisine located in the heart of downtown Toronto. If you have a palette that is drawn to African food, or are simply fueled with the curiosity on what the buzz is about, you should make it a date this Easter.
Sk Cookks specializes in all courses; from finger foods such as their savory beef samosas, to main courses like their jollof rice and signature Kak’s chicken combo. This is one spot that literally catapults you to the streets of Lagos with every bite of their food.
6. Chubby’s Jamaican Kitchen
Is smoky, spicy jerk chicken served with a side of brown rice and peas, garnished with fried plantains your vibe? Then you wanna be friends with Chubby’s Jamaican Kitchen this long weekend. Their Pon di side collection and their renowned Chubby’s Jerk burger are especially sought after by the crowd.
They are situated on Portland for dine-in lovers and offer delivery options for the homebodies. It might not be a bad decision to skim through their menu on their website before you go as trying to choose from the long list of options can prove to be a time-waster.
5. Petros 82
It is one thing to eat good food this Easter, but the purpose is defeated if it is not in a place that is fueled with positive energy, vibrance and vibes. Petros 82 is the goal for that Greek experience you’ve been yearning to have. And you are in luck, they will be open this Good Friday with original Greek and Mediterranean food that will blow your mind.
Make it a date at their Toronto location on Adelaide street, allow your taste buds be pampered by the robust menu and cocktails like Santorini Sunrise offered by Petros 82.
4. Roselle Toronto
Finally the sugar rush! Roselle showcases something for every sweet-tooth craving there is. With the most friendly prices, you can be sure to hit the climax of your sweet desires. They serve madeleines, cake cups, shortbreads, cookies and their signature 2 pk Earl special.
This is not a dine-in spot. You can preorder their daily offerings through their website for pick up. If Easter would be a long weekend, you could as well do with some icing on the cake.
3. Planta
As you may have guessed from the name of this breathtakingly beautiful spot, this is for our plant-based folks. The creation of Planta by founder Steven Salm and co-founder David Lee reinforced the possibility of bringing fine-dining to the vegetarian world.
With uniquely designed dishes like their Thai lettuce wraps and the Poke Bowl, your cravings just met their perfect match. Planta has a number of locations with 2 in the heart of Toronto – on Queen and Yorkville.
2. Mumbaikar
Fasten your seatbelts ladies and gentlemen! We are off to Mumbai, India with this one. Mumbaikar has maintained such a reputation for producing dishes that are grounded in core Indian cuisine, but made with that contemporary touch. I visited recently and had their chicken Thali for a change, I was absolutely blown away by the absolute depth of flavor.
If you are yet to try Indian food , this is the place to go this Easter. They can be found on Bloor street. I must warn though, if you are not big on spice, it is best that you advise of your tolerance level as you begin making your order.
1. Quetzal
From making authentic Quesabirrias to quickly whipping up chicken fajitas, I can authoritatively assert the detailed process that goes into creating Mexican dishes. Or even better, find my way to Quetzal since they are Michelin masters in culinary art. I had the delight of visiting them during the holidays and it was such an experience.
You could tell the owners of Quetzal put a lot of thought into every little design detail, from the walls to the lights.
The service was smooth, staff polite and of course, the fooooood! Visit them on College street and I strongly advise you reserve prior to visiting as you may not find a seat.
